The head office of this international project is situated at the Observatory in Leiden. National coordinator Frederiek Westra van Holthe will be located in the Dwingeloo office. Hopefully this leads to combined ASTRON/UNAWE projects - reaching out to young children and inspiring them with astronomy in general and in particular the work that goes on at ASTRON/JIVE in the areas of astrophysics, telescope design, construction & operations, and technical research.

Although UNAWE was founded by Prof. George Miley only five years ago, it is already active in 40 countries and comprises a global network of almost 500 astronomers, teachers and other educators. The international network provides a platform for sharing ideas, best practices and resources between educators from around the world. The network will also be used to run ambitious global projects, with the aim of broadening children's horizons beyond their local area and to show them that they are part of a global community (and of the Universe, of course).

The official goals of UNAWE are: To promote awareness of the Universe, especially in children, by creating an international network, organizing teacher training sessions en developing educational resources.
